A teacher asked students to carry a bag with potatoes (one for each person they wouldn’t forgive). The weight and burden of carrying the potatoes for a week taught them how bitterness weighs them down, making them realize forgiveness is for their own freedom, not the offenders.
Everyone needs to learn this lesson. The wounds caused by betrayal can heal and can be forgotten as well as forgiven. The burden of bitterness will always cause us to bow under the burden they bring.
I wish I could tell everyone in the world that laying aside that burden is an easy thing to do. With every passing day, the need to wipe the slate clean again becomes our daily endeavor.
